Without attempting to make gay themes more accessible to a general audience, this feature realistically portrays the problems a homosexual has in finding and maintaining a fulfilling relationship in a straight world. Gates plays a young sculptor having an affair with aging professor Franz,
which tragically ends when Franz is accidentally killed by his lover. The sculptor then has a heated affair with one of his male models, but this ends when the model (Rowley) decides he likes women more than men. Straight audiences will find SO LONG, BLUE BOY hard to relate to.
