The Smurfs And The Magic Flute: Review

This sub-par feature is based on the European characters that took US TV cartoons by storm. This feature adds nothing to the Smurfs' reputation. It's a simple enough story with a crook in the Middle Ages trying to purloin a magic flute that has the uncanny ability to send people into fits of dancing whenever it is played. It is owned by a character named Pee Wee who lives in a castle. When the flute is stolen, Pee Wee and his pal, Johan, have to get it back. The actual blue-tinted Smurfs don't come into the plot until well into the movie, which is sort of a cheat for any of the children who thought they'd have a chance to see their favorites for an entire film. Pee Wee and Johan meet a wizard who sends them, via hypnosis, to Smurfland. The blue creatures build a duplicate flute for Pee Wee, and there is sort of a blow-off as Pee Wee battles the villain, Oilycreep. The animation is about Saturday morning standard; one would have hoped that they might have done something better for a feature. Perhaps it's funnier in French or Flemish, because it doesn't mean much in English. The only benefit we can cite is that it is truly a G-rated picture, so kids can see it--if they don't fall asleep first. leave a comment
