Smoky

1966, Movie, NR, 102 mins

starstarstarstar
This is an overlong remake of a Will James tale that was first produced in 1933 at only 66 minutes. The original story was not eventful enough to stretch into another 40 minutes, so new plot elements were added. Parker plays an old cowboy and rodeo star who grows attached to a wild horse which he eventually tames. Parker's evil brother attempts to exchange the horse, Smoky, for some IOUs, but allows the horse to escape while attempting to take it from the corral. The brother is trampled to death in the process, and Parker and his horse are separated. Parker enlists in the armed services. Meanwhile, the horse is ruined on the rodeo circuit, eventually ending up pulling a junk wagon. After many years, Parker and Smoky are brought together again. Includes the songs "Smoky"(Ernie Sheldon, Leith Stevens, sung by Hank Thompson), "Five Dollar Bill," "Smile As You Go By," "Trouble and Misery," "Queen of the Rockin' R" (Hoyt Axton, sung by Axton). leave a comment
