The first feature from Susan Seidelman (DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN), a graduate of New York University's film school, SMITHEREENS is a retelling of the old girl-comes-to-big-city-to-make-it-big story, but with a gritty and realistic perspective. Basically a comment on the effects of pop music on modern youth, the film traces the journey of Wren (Susan Berman) through the depths of the lower East Side, as she latches on to a rock musician, Eric (Richard Hell), in the hope of getting her own chance on the music scene. Packed with the energy that is Wren's motivating force, SMITHEREENS effectively re-creates an atmosphere that is destructive in that its inhabitants want to break with received values, but have not found replacements. Made on a budget of $80,000, this picture was the first low-budget American independent to get a showing at Cannes. Though SMITHEREENS is not without its problems--much of the material seems to be cliched--it is a good display of what a persistent creative drive can achieve. The film was shot in 16mm and blown up to 35mm. leave a comment
