SLITHER

If your idea of fun involves zombies, monstrous physical transformations and alien slugs bent on world domination, look no further than James Gunn's gleeful homage to all things gross and horrible actually makes good on the "horror comedy" label by being both flat-out creepy and darkly funny. The Office's Jenna Fischer Wants You...

... to see Slither, which arrives on DVD today. In fact, she was nice enough to e-mail me this list of reasons why you should sample the horror pic (costarring Jenna, and written and directed by her crazy-lucky husband, James Gunn):1. "It's a crowd-pleaser, fun to watch with a group of people." 2. "It is gross and gory, but not too scary. It kind of reminds me of The Fly in that way." 3. "It's funny! Funnier than most comedies. I would compare it to Pulp Fiction in the way that Pulp Fiction is hilarious but you still find it in the drama section at the video store. Slither will have you laughing out loud." 4. "The acting is better than in any horror movie I've seen this year. (And I'm not just saying that because I'm in it.)"5. "The DVD extras are awesome, especially 'Meet Bill Pardy,' where the entire cast and crew roast Nathan Fillion. So great!" 6. "It won Highest Body Count at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards — 104 killings in 104 minutes."That last one alone sold me. (Need two... read more

DVD Tuesdays: Slither Is Here and I'm Psyched

I love talking about movies but Ive never been able to organize movie-night get-togethers So this is the next best thing On Tuesdays Im going to spotlight a DVD and suggest some virtual-discussion startersHalloween my absolute favorite holiday of the year is right around the corner and one of my favorite genre films of this year is debuting on DVD How perfect a confluence is that Slither received what I call a hit and run release If you didnt see it the week it opened you probably didnt see it at all And it did a fast fade despite unusually good reviews So maybe the studios that dont bother to screen horror movies in advance are right Nothing critics say about them good or bad can sway the hard-core genre audience Why that audience didnt turn out for it I cant say because Slither pulls off two of the toughest tricks in the filmmaking book First it successfully mixes humor and horror note the emphasis on the word successfully For eve read more

24 Alum Eyes a New Runaway Hit

Leslie Hope and Elisha Cuthbert were two of the first actors I interviewed for TVGuide.com, back in 2002, during the debut season of a little-show-that-could called 24. Coincidentally, I was slated to talk with each of the "Bauer women" again this week, but one of them "politely passed" at the last minute. The actress I now like a bit more is Ms. Hope, who called me from the set of Runaway, a CW drama debuting Sept. 25, and concerning a family that assumes a new id read more
