Two attorneys, John Webb (O'Brien) and Russell Sampson (Crawford), decide to take advantage of some under-the-table political dealing in the highway department to gain some business. Alma Brehmer (Dodd), a pretty divorcee involved in the scandal, is found dead with a knife in her back, and fat-cat politico Cushing (Arnold) frames Webb, whose problems are compounded when his secretary is killed in the same manner. O'Brien sets out to solve the murders, but finds himself getting into deeper trouble with each step. This old-fashioned and not entirely successful detective story is burdened by too many cliches, and Tay Garnett's direction never pulls the material together, consistently abandoning the main story for a variety of subplots, though there are some good moments of comedy. Garnett had initially been pleased with the production, priding himself on finishing ahead of schedule and under budget. "I realized exactly how bad SLIGHTLY HONORABLE must be," he wrote in his autobiography, Light Your Torches and Pull Up Your Tights, "when the officer at the United Artists' gate (the man who had been parking my car) asked me for identification one morning." leave a comment
