A robbery of an armored car is botched with a little girl getting killed in the process. Stone (Peter Coyote), knowing that only trouble will arise if he remains in America, flees to England. There he takes up residence with Terry (Mel Smith), an old friend, and his live-in girl friend, Madge (Billie Whitelaw). What Stone doesn't realize is that he is being stalked by Costello (Philip Sayer), a cold-blooded hit man hired by the grieving father of the dead girl. The film quickly turns into a series of cat-and-mouse games as Stone realizes what is going on. Like BLOOD SIMPLE, this film is all style and little substance. Director Terry Bedford gives it an atmospheric look using such gimmicks as blood-red filters over the camera lens and silhouettes to create an interesting visual style. However, his skills as a storyteller don't come close to his abilities as a visual stylist. The script is poorly concocted, lurching from one set piece to another without any of the much-needed suspense that should be inherent within the material. leave a comment
