Confused and at times incomprehensible, SLAUGHTERHOUSE ROCK tries so hard to include a little bit of everything that it ends up delivering nothing. Alex Gardner (Nicholas Celozzi) is having horrible dreams of a prison plagued by the dead in which he is an inmate. These visions grow so disturbing that they begin to interfere with his daily life. With the help of his brother (Tom Reilly) and his girl friend (Donna Denton), Alex seeks the guidance of an expert in the occult, who discerns that the place in his dreams is the abandoned isle of Alcatraz. He suggests that Alex go there to face his fear head on, whereupon his nightmares should cease. Backed up by a few wise-cracking friends, Alex duly heads out to the island and encounters the ghost of dead rock star Sammy Mitchell (Toni Basil), who explains that Alcatraz is haunted by the evil spirit of a US cavalry commandant (it seems he had a thing for eating people raw). It is up to Alex to kill the demon and save his friends, who, one by one, are being killed and/or possessed by the rampaging beast. This movie is all over the place. One moment it's about a young man trying to deal with his nightmares, the next it's about a dead rock star chasing down evil spirits. For its first 20 minutes or so, SLAUGHTERHOUSE ROCK is a serious-minded horror tale (and a pretty promising one at that), then, when the kids arrive on Alcatraz, the film switches gears and decides to be a comedy--a switch that annoys and finally damages a movie that asks its audience to take an already-implausible story seriously. leave a comment
