SKULLS, THE

Who'd have thought some geeky adolescent Dungeons and Dragons freak's fantasies of what goes on behind the corridors of power would have wound up a major motion picture? But that's exactly what this dopey "thriller" is; it proposes that whenever ambitious judges and senators aren't attending to the business of consolidating rich white men's stranglehold on the world's affairs, they're encouraging college boys to prank around in scarlet monks' hoods and coffins, play Truth or Dare in well-appointed dungeons, brand each other, and pair off into teams suggestively referred to as "soulmates." Please. Luke McNamara (Joshua Jackson, of TV's Dawson's Creek) is a townie who's worked his way into an unnamed Ivy League college (Yale, judging by the big "Y" on the locker wall). By virtue of his rowing prowess, Luke gets invited to join the Skulls, the most secret of the campus's secret societies and, apparently, the worst kept secret in the East. Immediately after, the good times start rolling: Luke's law school application is accepted before he's even filled out the paperwork, $20,000 appears mysteriously in his bank account, and influential rich kid Caleb Mandrake (Paul Walker) is suddenly his best bud. On the downside, Luke's roommate, aspiring journalist Will (Hill Harper) — who just the other day counseled Luke that "if it's secret and elite, it can't be good" — kills himself under peculiar circumstances. That strikes Luke, apparently a clever lad, as suspicious; his concerns are shared by Chloe (Leslie Bibb, of TV's Popular), the levelheaded, rich beauty on whom Luke has an undeclared crush. Meanwhile, all those masters of the universe are looking up rules in their little wizard's... sorry,Skulls books and taking votes that involve waving around cool-looking skull rattles. Again, please. Fans of the young leads and aspiring MST3K writers may enjoy this balderdash; others are advised not to waste their time. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
