This latest offering from gay-sleaze auteur Bruce LaBruce isn't exactly hardcore porn — the sex is mostly simulated and not at all sexy — nor is it artistic enough to be called an art film. And, sad to say, it isn't another hilarious combination of the two, in the grand tradition of LaBruce's SUPER 8 1/2 and HUSTLER WHITE. It's just an excessive and uninspired exercise in fetishism that could only appeal to those who share the director's own predilection for racist boys in bleached Levis, Doc Martens and braces. The "action" centers around a group of London skinheads, most of whom appear to be gay, their homophobic claims to the contrary notwithstanding. For Dieter and Dirk (Steve Master, Eden Miller) foreplay involves prowling the parks looking for gay men to bash; Wolfgang (Ralph Steel) follows a young German man (Jens Hammer) into a public restroom for a quickie; Manfred (Tim Vincent), who claims to be straight, uses Mein Kampf for a little one-handed reading; and Reinhold (Tom International) first has very loud sex with his girlfriend Cameltoe (Nikki Richardson), then rolls over for Wolfgang. The gang decide to engage in a little CLOCKWORK ORANGE-style B&E, invading the home of Wolfgang's trick and sexually assaulting his black lover (Bastian). The sex here is pretty graphic and utterly passionless, but what really puts LaBruce's film in a league with pornography is the abysmal acting (only Richardson manages to put a convincing spin on lines such as "Drop that f**king cheese curl, now!"). If the film is meant to be a bold confession of un-PC sexual desires, LaBruce already exhausted the subject back in 1991, with NO SKIN OFF MY ASS. And if he means to reveal the homoerotic subtext underlying the skinhead phenomenon, that's a subject that practically deconstructs itself. leave a comment --Ken Fox
