At the 1936 Winter Olympics, a Russian, a Finn, and an American win the gold, silver, and bronze medals in a skiing competition. The skiers are depicted as friends, and, at the medal ceremony, officials proudly proclaim that war is a thing of the past. The story then moves ahead to the Russo-Finnish War in which troops on skis, including the 1936 Finnish team, must defend the mountainous border from the enemy.
