Garland is a writer who decides to hang out in the Los Angeles slum areas so she can absorb the atmosphere for a book project. She meets Nielsen, a denizen of the area who lives in a beat-up trailer. Garland discovers that the man is also a writer who possesses a number of well-written manuscripts. She takes the manuscripts to Maross, a literary critic, and tries to promote Nielsen as a great new talent. It turns out that Nielsen was once a great screenwriter who became tired of what success had brought him. He had faked his own death to escape, and when Garland's plans remind him of the old days he quietly disappears. The story is forced at times, but overall this is a good independent feature with nice-looking production values. The direction hides the script weaknesses, overcoming some of the cliches and stereotypes. The strongest attraction is the wonderful cast of street characters. Burdett is a junkie prostitute about to have a child. She's supported by McDowall, a disabled character who refuses to judge her. Burdett's performance is particularly accomplished, taking her character through several emotional turns with some nice feeling. leave a comment
