A strained romantic melodrama starring O'Neil as a young Manhattan model who meets and falls for Gleason, a rural-born boy who has just landed a job as a census taker. Gleason's small town roots immediately sense trouble when he is introduced to O'Neil's acquaintance, Wallace, a dandy from Chicago. When O'Neil's sister, O'Day, finds herself forced to ask her sibling for a loan because her husband, Robards, has been out of work, Wallace moves in to take advantage of the vulnerable housewife and arranges a tryst.
