A hastily assembled follow-up to the surprise smash hit of summer 1992, SISTER ACT 2 is a slapdash affair, with paper-thin plotting and characters more or less redeemed by some winning musical sequences. Whoopi Goldberg reprises her role as Deloris Van Cartier, a sequin-clad Las Vegas
entertainer who, in the original SISTER ACT, hid out in a conservative convent to escape some vengeful gangster associates. This time around, Deloris is approached by her erstwhile Mother Superior (Maggie Smith), who requests her help at St. Francis High, a failing parochial school in urban San
Francisco. Deloris (uncharacteristically) agrees without a fight, and once again assumes her nom-de-nun of Sister Mary Clarence, sallying forth to bring her own peculiar powers to bear on a bunch of mildly recalcitrant music students.
