The sentimental true story of Soeur Sourire, the singing nun who made it all the way to the Ed Sullivan Show, is faithfully retold. Reynolds plays the guitar-strumming Belgian nun who takes an interest in Cordell, a motherless boy whose father is alcoholic. The only one who loves the tyke is his 17-year-old sister, Ross. Reynolds writes the song "Dominique" for Cordell. Montalban, a warmhearted priest, does his best to promote the song. He talks to Everett, an old pal who is now a record producer. It turns out that he and Reynolds attended the Paris Conservatory of Music together. Reynolds is shocked when she discovers that Ross has posed for some risque photographs to help support her family. Garson (in a cameo role as Mother Prioress), admonishes Reynolds for letting Ross's father know about the photos. Meanwhile, Everett is pushing "Dominique" and taking a somewhat romantic interest in Reynolds. The song becomes an international hit, and brings Ed Sullivan and a camera crew to Brussels to film the singing nun for his TV show. Reynolds, understandably confused by all of this, goes to Montalban for advice. When Cordell is hurt in an accident, she promises to give up her music if he recovers. Naturally, he does, and Reynolds heads for a tiny African village, leaving her guitar with Ross. THE SINGING NUN was created in the style of MGM's popular family musicals of the 1940s, loaded with gloss and sugary sentimentality. The direction shamelessly panders to these elements, resulting in sluggish development. The story is somewhat fictionalized because the Catholic authorities objected to biographical films about clergy members. However, audiences had a real sweet tooth that year, and the film was a big box office success. It received an Oscar nomination for Best Musical Score. Songs, sung by Reynolds, include "Dominique," "The Nun's Song," "Sister Adele," "It's A Miracle," "Beyond the Stars," "A Pied Piper's Song"(Soeur Sourire, Randy Sparks), "Brother John," "Lovely"(Sparks), "Raindrops"(Sparks, inspired by Sourire's "Chante Riviere"), "Je Voudrais," "Mets Ton Joli Jupon," "Avec Toi," "Alleluia"(Sourire). leave a comment
