At the end of WW II former sailor MacMurray returns to Singapore, where he takes up his old business of pearl smuggling. His life before this time is told in flashback: he had romanced and wed Gardner, but on their wedding night there was an attack by a Japanese air squadron and Gardner was presumed killed. It turns out she is quite alive, though suffering from amnesia and now married to Culver. Mixed in with this is a subplot involving some gangsters who want MacMurray to reveal the whereabouts of some pearls he hid in a hotel room during the war. Gardner is kidnaped, but MacMurray saves her in this far-fetched and slow-paced adventure. MacMurray is okay but Gardner doesn't work at all in her role. The direction is uninspiring, the excitement minimal. SINGAPORE was made on an A-picture budget, but couldn't escape its B reputation. It was remade in 1957 with a new title location: ISTANBUL. leave a comment
