This fitfully interesting film contains some nicely atmospheric moments and some fairly shocking gore. O'Neal plays a lawyer who spends the night in a house he's trying to sell for its mysterious owner (Patterson). The place was once an insane asylum, and its history is told in unsettling flashbacks starring New York underground film actors Ondine, Smith, Darling, and Brown. It seems that the doctors in the asylum were as sadistic and cruel as some of the patients, and the original owner of the place finally let the inmates go. A slaughter of the doctors ensued, and the freed patients wound up assimilating themselves into the town. Now, of course, someone wielding an axe is out for revenge, and the former mental patients are killed off one by one. John Carradine and Mary Woronov are featured in the modern-day scenes. leave a comment
