Pretty damn awful. Technically, despite the musical score and sound effects, this is what it says it is, a silent movie. It does have two (yes, count them, two) good, surprising moments: Legendary French mime Marcel Marceau uttering the film's one line of dialogue ("No") and Mel Brooks, Dom DeLuise and Marty Feldman falling on top of James Caan in his trailer. Brooks plays Mel Funn (we're not going to touch that one), a film director who has seen better days. Art imitates life. Along with pals Feldman and DeLuise (the three seem to be straining to imitate the Three Stooges--how nice) they amble along trying to convince a lot of stars to appear in his latest film, which of course ends up being a smash. A series of heavily telegraphed, desperately played and incredibly unfunny sight gags, SILENT MOVIE is truly a maddeningly insulting salute to the golden age of film comedy. leave a comment
