This retelling of the Zorro legend was compiled from episodes of the Disney television series. Williams is cast as the masked avenger who's always one step ahead of the evil politicos trying to discover his identity. Although the baddies come close to accomplishing this goal, Williams' servant, Sheldon, helps the do-gooder keep his mask in place. After successfully transforming the "Davy Crockett" TV show into a full-length movie, the Disney people decided to repeat the recipe with THE SIGN OF ZORRO. However, the film is too episodic, having been shot in a television style that translates poorly to the larger medium. Lewis, who plays Williams' father here, was cast as Zorro in ZORRO'S BLACK WHIP in 1944 (although his character was not called Zorro, and the main character was a female masked hero called "The Black Whip"). The music was composed by Lava, who had also created the score for the "Zorro" serials for Republic. After THE SIGN OF ZORRO was released, Republic tried to cash in by releasing feature versions from their old serials GHOST OF ZORRO and ZORRO RIDES AGAIN, as did 20th Century Fox, which re-released THE MARK OF ZORRO (1940). All of the films, including THE SIGN OF ZORRO, did poorly at the box office. leave a comment
