Receiving a limited release on both coasts, SIESTA was one of the most talked about films of 1987 and one of the most panned. Directed by Lambert, the rock video maker who contributed to "Madonnamania" by directing the singer's best and most popular videos--"Borderline," "Like a Virgin," and "Material Girl"--SIESTA is a hallucinatory, metaphoric, nonlinear story of a disturbed woman who is driven to destruction by l'amour fou. Barkin plays a daredevil skydiver whose upcoming jump--into the mouth of an active volcano--is being promoted by her husband, Sheen. She, instead, opts for a different jump--flying off to Spain and chasing after trapeze artist Byrne, a former lover who has since married Rossellini. The film skips around over a period of five days, beginning with a corpselike Barkin lying at the end of an airport runway. By the end, Barkin has crossed paths with artsy British socialites Sands and Foster, the mysterious Jones, and cabbie-from-hell Sayle. It's all very arty and metaphysical and more than a little tedious. Barkin does what she can with the role, though just what she was supposed to do with it was probably a mystery even to her. Although SIESTA was Lambert's first feature, it was not her first feature directing job. She had previously been hired to direct the Prince's UNDER THE CHERRY MOON, but she and Prince parted ways after two weeks of production. The script was written by Knop (cowriter of 9 1/2 WEEKS) from a novel by Patrice Chaplin, daughter-in-law of Charlie. The lead role was originally meant for Madonna, but she felt that doing a nude scene (after all her Playboy and Penthouse publicity) would work against her career ambitions. leave a comment
