Short Eyes: Review
Davison, the rat man of WILLARD, plays a child molester sent to prison. The prison slang for his crime is "short eyes," viewed by the other convicts as the lowliest offense one can commit. His fellow inmates, a rag-tag collection of rapists, murderers, junkies, and pimps, make his life a living hell. This gritty, well-acted drama was filmed on location in the abandoned New York City Men's House of Detention, in pseudodocumentary style. SHORT EYES has a dark, claustrophobic feeling that heightens the drama. Former convicts and ex-junkies are cast, which adds to the realism. The ensemble is a tight one that places the audience right in the middle of the nightmare. This was adapted from a play by Pinero (an ex-con himself) that was originally produced on stage by Joseph Papp. At moments SHORT EYES acknowledges its theatrical beginnings with some slightly stagey speeches. But overall, the tense, taut drama speaks for itself. A fine film that unfortunately was overlooked upon release. Look for musicians Fender and Mayfield (the latter of whom scored the film) in minor parts as convicts.
