This may well be the best romantic comedy ever made. The great Ernst Lubitsch handled his "small" theme brilliantly, bringing the lives of everyday people to the screen as he had never done before. James Stewart stars as a clerk in a Budapest leather-goods shop who's been exchanging romantic letters with an unknown fellow lonely heart. Coincidentally, Margaret Sullavan, who was rudely rebuffed when she applied for a job in the shop, is also carrying on a steamy epistolary romance with a man she's never met.
