While some may object to the storytelling techniques employed by playwright and screenwriter Willy Russell to depict his title character, others will find themselves enchanted by SHIRLEY VALENTINE, in which Shirley (Pauline Collins, re-creating her role in the Broadway and London hit) saucily addresses the camera to explain the actions, reactions, and events of her daily existence. Born and raised in Liverpool, Shirley is a dreamer who has lost sight of her dreams, having been sidetracked by motherhood and marriage to the hard-working but chauvinistic Joe (Bernard Hill). When Shirley decides to accompany a friend on holiday to Greece, where she has a brief but eye-opening affair, she regains her self-respect and independence, leaving it up to Joe to decide just how badly he wants his wife back. Collins seems born to play Shirley, Lewis Gilbert directs with a sure hand, Russell's dialog is witty, and the film is solidly entertaining. Collins was nominated for Best Actress Oscar, but lost to Jessica Tandy for DRIVING MISS DAISY. Also nominated was the song "The Girl Who Used to Be Me." leave a comment
