While in a session with her psychiatrist, Harders relates a story (told in black-and-white flashbacks) about her encounters with visitors from outer space. The aliens have come to her in the form of a motorcycle gang during her visit to a local amusement park. Harders tries to tell people her story, but when no one will believe her, she goes mad. Haddrick plays a Duke of Edinburgh statue in a wax museum that the aliens bring to life to be their spokesperson between themselves and the earthlings. This off-the-wall comedy was made by the director of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975). Like ROCKY HORROR, SHIRLEY THOMPSON VERSUS THE ALIENS was originally a stage production before hitting the screen. Sharman shows a good use of cinematic tools: varying uses of black and white, cleverly underexposed film in scenes from the asylum where Harders spends time, and wonderfully filmed fantasy sequences in color. leave a comment
