This violent psychological drama drops viewers into a cesspool of fight fixing and selling out while exploring the repercussions of emotional shortsightedness. Regularly harassed by the police, London boxing promoter Billy "Shiner" Simpson (Michael Caine) doesn't have time to respond to charges involving an illegal match that left one of the fighters brain damaged. Shiner fiercely believes that his very own Golden Boy — his son, Eddie (Matthew Marsden) — is going to propel him to the big leagues, and bets everything he has on the boy. But Shiner's East End empire is a house of cards: Hoping to please the prickly Shiner, a promoter has been matching the skittish Eddie against competitors he can easily defeat, leading Shiner to believe — mistakenly — that Eddie has the killer instinct needed to knock out the bruiser owned by Shiner's rival, Frank Spedding (Martin Landau). Shiner's unscrupulous daughter, Georgie (Frances Barber), is afraid that Eddie's going to lose the Simpson family nest egg, so she and her husband go behind Shiner's back to Spedding and throwing the fight with Spedding. Eddie crumbles under pressure and loses, and Shiner drives his son to an isolated spot and beats the tar out of him. A shot meant for Shiner rings out, but Eddie is hit. With the cops hot on his tail, Shiner tries to terrorize various associates into giving up the shooter. But Shiner has made enemies throughout the boxing world; the question is whether learning the would-be killer's motive finally force Shiner to understand the effect his brutality has had on his family and take responsibility for his actions. This pungent crime drama echoes the themes of William Shakespeare's King Lear, and benefits from superb acting and Scott Cherry's trenchant script. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
