The popular comic strip that ran from 1916-1930 is brought to the screen and, with its theme of unrequited love, aimed more at adults than at children. Channing and Bracken are the voices of the main characters, recreating roles played by Eartha Kitt and Bracken on Broadway. The main cartoon character is a cockroach who is the reincarnation of a despondent poet who had committed suicide. He composes his poetry on the typewriter of a newspaper columnist, and the main object of his verses and affection is a friendly female cat. These two characters seem to take on the personalities of the people behind the voices, namely Bracken and Channing. The roach writes letters and poems by hopping on typewriter keys; he can't use the shift-lock key, so everything is in lower-case letters. The animation style of SHINBONE ALLEY was compared by some critics to YELLOW SUBMARINE (1968), which mixed visual forms in a montage-like fashion and shifted painting styles. Songs included "I Am Only a Poor Humble Cockroach," "Blow Wind Out of the North," "Cheerio My Deario (Toujours Gai)," "Ah, the Theater, the Theater," "What Do We Care If We're Down and Out?," "The Moth Song," "Lullaby for Mehitabel's Kittens," "The Shinbone Alley Song," "The Lightning Bug Song""Here Pretty Pretty Pussy," "Ladybugs of the Evening," "Archy's Philosophies," "They Don't Have it Here," "Romeo and Juliet," "Come to Meeoww" (George Kleinsinger, Joe Darion). leave a comment
