The popular comic strip that ran from 1916-1930 is brought to the screen and, with its theme of unrequited love, aimed more at adults than at children. Channing and Bracken are the voices of the main characters, recreating roles played by Eartha Kitt and Bracken on Broadway. The main cartoon character is a cockroach who is the reincarnation of a despondent poet who had committed suicide. He composes his poetry on the typewriter of a newspaper columnist, and the main object of his verses and affection is a friendly female cat. These two characters seem to take on the personalities of the people behind the voices, namely Bracken and Channing. The roach writes letters...
