SHILOH

First, let's clear up the title: Shiloh is a dog. And this is a well-intentioned but lackluster boy and his dog picture, adapted from a popular children's book. Little man Marty (Blake Heron) comes across an adorable pup that's been brutally injured by his disagreeable owner (Scott Wilson), a hunter and a poacher to boot. The picture boasts an accomplished cast, including Michael Moriarty as a postman and Rod Steiger as a doctor and general store owner, but it's entirely without momentum or suspense. Once we've been introduced to the winning pooch and his scrappy rescuer-to-be -- a child so earnest and noble he should be nominated for sainthood -- there's no question but that the twain shall meet, despite the perfunctory obstacles placed in their paths. The real trouble isn't predictability, though: Kids like predictability. It's that the generic, apple-pie rural world in which it takes place is so saccharine and stilted that it will unite adults and many youngsters in a mutual desire to run screaming from the theater. Some very young children may be won over by Heron's youthful pluck, but kids who've discovered the addictive pleasures of Nintendo -- or even the manic joy of singing along with Barney -- will probably want to be counted out. leave a comment
