Arriving in Tombstone with his sidekick Hayes, Rogers is mistaken for the gunslinger the mayor has sent for. Rogers goes along with the impersonation, becoming sheriff and discovering a plot by the crooked mayor to gain control of the town. The real gunslinger comes to town, but by this
time Rogers is thoroughly on to the mayor and manages to handle the hired gun in a manner that looks easy. Along the way Rogers spouts off two songs: "Ridin' on a Rocky Road" (Styne, Meyer), "Sky Bald Paint" (Nolan), and saloon girl Knox sings two more: "You Should Have Seen Pete" (Styne, Meyer)
and "Don't Gamble with Romance" (Tinturin).
