She: Review

This story, based on an H. Rider Haggard novel, has seen four screen adaptations (1917, 1926, 1935, and 1965), but this Italian version was probably inspired more by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg than by any of its predecessors. Sandahl Bergman is the title character, a woman who runs around in varying degrees of undress as she does battle with gladiators, mutants, and other assorted bad guys. Any semblance of plot is quickly swallowed by the myriad of incoherent developments and constant jabs of lowbrow humor. At best, the picture plays like amateur night in fantasy land. It was originally filmed in 1982 but for obvious reasons was withheld from release. Three years later, SHE finally was foisted onto audiences courtesy of the Cinemax cable television network, a veritable dumping ground for movies that can't even get into third-run cinemas. leave a comment
