A pleasant, light-hearted yarn that treats the touchy subject of illegitimacy in a small Irish community with a sense of humor. Herlie plays the unwed mother of six children whose fathers, except for one, are the village's most prominent citizens. Because she is a threat to other townspeople--particularly O'Hara, the wife of one of Herlie's former lovers (MacGowran)--ways are thought up of removing the woman from the confines of the village. First they attempt to have Herlie declared an unfit mother in order to have the children taken from her. But she proves to be a more caring mother than the other women of the town.
