Simmons and Mitchum found themselves together again after their successful outing in ANGEL FACE. However, they are sorely out of place in this offbeat comedy that features Simmons as a wealthy woman who decides to lend a hand to the people of Progress, Arkansas, helped to raise the money for a much-needed operation when she was a girl. She now wishes to show her gratitude by bestowing monetary gifts upon the townspeople. However, her plan fails when these windfalls disrupt the lives of some of Progress' most prominent citizens: Judge Walburn decides to pack up and move; general storekeeper Buchanan closes shop; and postman Tomlin ceases his appointed rounds. In addition, all sorts of riffraff move into town in the hope of collecting some dough. Simmons reveals herself to be the source of all the newfound wealth and makes ready to leave, but Mitchum, the town doctor, persuades her to stay on and marry him. All of this was supposed to be funny, but the humor never really works. This was the last of three films Simmons made in rapid succession to complete her RKO contract obligations (ANGEL CITY and AFFAIR WITH A STRANGER were the others). She couldn't say no to the opportunity to escape from Howard Hughes' financially troubled studio, and Hughes couldn't make up his mind what to call this film with which he had hoped to revive the screwball comedy tradition of the 1930's and 1940's. Although it was shot in 1952, Hughes and company fiddled with it for another 16 months before releasing it. In the process, he toyed with the idea of calling it "Beautiful But Dangerous," "Enough For Happiness," and "She Had to Say Yes" before deciding on the title as we know it. leave a comment
