This was to be the last film directed by Castle, known mainly for the advertising gimmickry in some of his 1950s productions. Marceau displays his mime talents in a rather weird tale about a puppeteer who, having been put down his entire life, finally has his revenge. In a double role in which he also plays an aging scientist who has learned to bring dead things back to life (a la FRANKENSTEIN), Marceau also lets it be known that he does have a voice. When the scientist dies, the puppeteer uses the tricks he's learned to get even with heartless members of his family. A gang of nasty bikers who ride into town rape Eilbacher and cause general havoc, giving Marceau the perfect target to display his new-found talents. All along, Marceau never loses his innate charm, which makes this tale fascinating in a strange way. North's score received an Oscar nomination. leave a comment
