Inferior remake of the 1948 Bob Hope vehicle PALEFACE, with Knotts trying to fill the shoes of Hope, and Rhoades those of Jane Russell. TV director Rafkin had the honors of making Knotts look stupid, which isn't very hard. The film is done in pure television style, the only difference being the Techniscope photography. Knotts is a Philadelphia dentist making the long trek out West, where he meets up with lady bandit Rhoades when she robs the stagecoach he is on. To get a pardon, she agrees to round up a group of gun traffickers. She tricks Knotts into marriage so that she can join a wagon train that doesn't accept single women. When Indians attack, Rhoades kills several Indians, but Knotts and everyone else thinks he did the fancy shooting. Knotts is elevated to hero status but meets with shame when the truth is revealed. However, he redeems himself when Rhoades is kidnaped by Indians, and he rescues her by dressing up as a squaw. Knotts is definitely no Hope, and Rhoades is far from Russell. The combination of 5-foot-11-inch Rhoades and the scrawny Knotts looks more ridiculous than funny, which pretty well sums up this movie. leave a comment
