1984, Movie, NR, 89 mins

A young woman (Elizabeth Trosper) stands by helplessly as all of her girl friends are being murdered. The case is being investigated by an overly enthusiastic cop (William J. Kulzer) who zeroes in on Jimmy Scott (Kevin Costner) as his chief suspect. Not only is this film repugnant in its exploitation of women, it's hopelessly inept in nearly every other department. Although it pretends to be a police thriller about a serial killer, SHADOWS RUN BLACK is basically an excuse to parade several well-endowed young women naked before the camera while they wait to be murdered in a variety of bloody ways. When the filmmakers don't even bother giving the victims a name and bill the actresses as "Girl Stabbed in Chest" and "Girl Killed in Kitchen," you can expect a totally gratuitous flesh-and-blood-fest. The film was shot in 1981 but not released until 1986, no doubt to cash in on Kevin Costner's rising star. leave a comment
