The alluring Hayworth plays a woman who inherits a debt-ridden circus after her father dies in this better-than-average melodrama. Her father owed $60,000 to one of his performers, a trick rider, who also happens to be hated by almost everyone in the show. After the film sets up all the
characters with a motive for murder, the rider turns up with a knife sticking out of his back. THE SHADOW is most interesting because it is the first film in which Hayworth received top billing.
