At the center of SHADOW PLAY is Morgan Hanna (Stone), a struggling writer who attempts come to terms with a devastating moment from her past. Seven years previously, her lover, Jeremy Crown (Laws), fell to his death from a lighthouse. Now Morgan returns to the site of that freak accident, hoping she will be able to finish writing a play exploring her feelings towards this incident. Millie Crown (Leachman), her dead lover's mother, welcomes Morgan into her home and then some creepy things start happening. Morgan begins seeing Jeremy every time she looks around, the accident keeps replaying in her dreams, and this pattern continues until Morgan finally discovers the truth about Jeremy's death. Right up to its climax, this story of the supernatural is never very involving. Moreover, the juxtaposition of Stone's play and her psychological state never gels. Shot on location on a island off the coast of Washington State, SHADOW PLAY was writer-director Susan Shadburne's feature debut. leave a comment
