This fictionalized account of actual WW II events set in Amsterdam is an enlightening and engaging exploration of the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands. De Vries and Krabbe are two men with vastly different methods of dealing with the German occupation of their country. The former is a highly educated Jew with a nonviolent bent that borders on collaboration. His goal is to secure the safe passage of Jews out of the country, an activity that requires him to work closely with Nazi officials.
