Trying to protect a lady from her irate husband, Powell inadvertently kills the man. She leaves and Powell is given a life sentence. Through the efforts of his con-artist cell mate, Hurst, Powell escapes and makes his way to a small southern town, where he changes his identity and makes a
go of it working in a mill. This includes placing his fingers in a milling machine in order to remove fingerprints. When cell mate Hurst manages to escape, Powell sends him to New York to find the woman who can clear Powell's name. She is now a notorious blackmailer and turns Hurst into the cops
