Trying to protect a lady from her irate husband, Powell inadvertently kills the man. She leaves and Powell is given a life sentence. Through the efforts of his con-artist cell mate, Hurst, Powell escapes and makes his way to a small southern town, where he changes his identity and makes a go of it working in a mill. This includes placing his fingers in a milling machine in order to remove fingerprints. When cell mate Hurst manages to escape, Powell sends him to New York to find the woman who can clear Powell's name.
