A strong Scott western with a typical revenge theme that is worked well by director Boetticher and screenwriter Kennedy. Scott is an ex-lawman tracking down the seven men who killed his wife during the robbery of a Wells Fargo office. During his search, Scott is joined by Reed and his wife, Russell, and bad guy Marvin. Marvin has hooked up with Scott in the hopes of snatching the bounty from the robbery and the gold Reed is carrying. His performance is one of the highlights of the film. The showdown between the ex-sheriff and the men responsible for his wife's death moves with the pace of an attacking rattlesnake. Scott kills Marvin in the end, after an Indian attack in which Reed is killed. In the final moments the lawman and Russell ride off together. This was the first of many westerns that teamed Scott, director Boetticher, and writer Kennedy (who would go on to direct). Boetticher later went on to become one of the leading directors of westerns in the 1950s. leave a comment
