This strange item has Hale, a collector of curios, in love with Todd, a jewel collector's daughter. When a valuable gem is missing from a reception in Todd's home under strange circumstances, the two set out in search of it. They end up taking a wild ride en route to the police, with their final destination being the abode of a man known only as Satan. The place is populated by a variety of unusual characters, including Rossitto, a dwarf who befriends the pair. A masked ball is held and Satan's henchmen make off with Todd, demanding the jewel under threat of torture. After some further harrowing adventures the lovers are reunited, though their respective mental conditions are less than intact. Bizarre, to say the least, and a forgotten classic for fans of the "so-bad-it's-good" genre. Todd later proved to be a comedian of some merit in her work with the Marx Brothers. Rossitto undoubtedly was one of cinema's most prolific little people. Beginning with his debut in 1927's THE BELOVED ROGUE (featuring John Barrymore), Rossitto appeared in over 200 different films including FREAKS (1932) and his featured role as "Master" in MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME (1985). He also served as a double for Shirley Temple in several of her features, operated a Hollywood newstand (customers included Charlie Chaplin and the Barrymores), ran an unsuccessful campaign for mayor of Los Angeles in 1941, and was one of the founding fathers of the Little People of America. leave a comment
