Hood cliches meet heist conventions in this crime drama about four women raised in a violent housing project and their brief career as bank robbers. Disgraced bank teller Frankie (Vivica A. Fox) -- her branch was held up by thugs from her neighborhood, and her bosses suspect her of being involved -- good-girl Stony (Jada Pinkett), shy Tisean (Kimberly Elise) and big, bad Cleo (Queen Latifah) are sick of being poor and oppressed. Frankie's inside knowledge of banks just might be their ticket out, but things go horribly wrong: Money changes everything, and next thing you know the friends are snapping and snarling at one another like weasels in a box. Director F. Gary Gray (FRIDAY) cut his teeth on music videos and has the requisite eye for a striking image. But he can also stage a scene -- all he needs to learn is to edit ruthlessly and he's set. The characters are two-dimensional types -- the good girl, the tough lesbian, the saintly mother -- but the cast gives its all. Just try not to get too distracted by the echoes of other movies, like DEAD END BOYZ N THE HOOD. leave a comment
