A solid international espionage tale, THE SERPENT is based on a true story. Vlassov (Yul Brynner) is a colonel in the Soviet spy hierarchy who defects to the West, claiming to have information on all the Soviet spies operating in Europe. Allan Davies (Henry Fonda) is the CIA chief who must determine whether or not Vlassov is a plant, while Philip Boyle (Dirk Bogarde), whose code name is "The Serpent," is the British agent assigned to investigate Vlassov and the information he provides. This is a gritty, tightly directed look at international intrigue, and the performances are all finely tuned. Particularly effective is Bogarde who offers a insightful portrait of a cool, calculating agent. leave a comment
