Set entirely in one location--a country home somewhere in Vermont--SEPTEMBER is more than a look at a family; it is a look at a small universe of people. Diane (Elaine Stritch) is an aging sex symbol who has survived the traumas of her past by letting them bounce off her tough veneer. Her daughter, Lane (Mia Farrow), is still struggling with an incident that occurred years before when, as a 14-year-old, she allegedly shot and killed her mother's gangster boyfriend. Diane and her most recent love, Lloyd (Jack Warden), are visiting Lane, who is in love with her neighbor, Peter (Sam Waterston). But Peter loves Stephanie (Dianne Wiest), Lane's good friend, a mother and wife who seeks an escape but doesn't have the courage to pursue it to its conclusion. Rounding out the group is Howard (Denholm Elliott), a neighbor who has helped Lane through a nervous breakdown, growing very close to her in the process. Despite the excellent acting and direction, many critics found little worth in SEPTEMBER. Still infatuated with the language of cinema, Allen has tried to make a film with commercial and artistic appeal. SEPTEMBER is a beautiful, carefully composed work, with Wiest and Stritch creating the most powerful characters. Farrow shines, too, in a difficult role. leave a comment
