Italian film locations add immensely to this simple romance. Fontaine and Cotten are on their way to New York from Rome: she to play the piano, he to patch up a shaky marriage and see the son he hardly knows. Engine trouble puts them in Naples, and they manage to miss their plane while sightseeing. They go back to reserve another plane and find out their original one crashed. Sensing they are already in love, unhappy with their other lives, and knowing they are listed among the dead in the wreckage, they start a new life together. However, Cotten's wife shows up in Italy, and both he and Fontaine realize they cannot run from reality. Both return to New York and their respective lives, with just some memories to keep them going. leave a comment
