An underrated psychological horror thriller, THE SENDER bombed at the box office because its studio had no idea how to sell a crisply directed shocker that didn't wallow in pointless gore effects. An unidentified 20-year-old who has attempted suicide (Zeljko Ivanek) is brought to a psychiatric clinic for treatment and placed under the supervision of Gail Farmer (Kathryn Harrold), a pretty young psychiatrist who dubs the patient "John Doe." It soon becomes apparent that John Doe, the Sender of the title, possesses the ability to telepathically transmit his disturbed nightmares and feelings into the minds of others. Unfortunately, the young man can't control these powers, and his dreams--involving hideous bugs, rats, and fires--are invading the brains of most of the people in the hospital. When his mysterious mother, Jerolyn (Shirley Knight), a domineering woman who has always thought her son was the second coming of Christ, is found dead, John Doe is the only suspect. Director Roger Christian (the set decorator for STAR WARS and the art director for ALIEN) slowly builds the suspense, keeping the performances calm and underplayed, so that when the fairly simple effects sequences do arrive, they are all the more horrifying and powerful. An intelligent film that refuses to resort to the kind of bloody, overblown direction that marks the work of so many other horror film directors. leave a comment
