Send Me No Flowers

1964, Movie, NR, 100 mins

The last and weakest Hudson-Day pairing is lame from the starting gate because the film opens with the couple already married, preventing any of the funny, somewhat-suggestive escapades that marked the first two films. Instead, SEND ME NO FLOWERS relies for a humorous situation on the hackneyed convention of mistaken identity. Hypochondriac Hudson enters the hospital for chest pains, overhears his doctor discussing the terminal illness of another patient, assumes that he is on his last legs. Hudson takes the news with aplomb and nobly sets out to find a new husband for Day who will provide the lifestyle she's grown accustomed to. He digs up her old college beau, Walker, now a rich oil man, and practically forces him on her. Day knows nothing about the "illness" and begins to suspect that Hudson is expressing guilt over an illicit affair. When she confronts him, he discloses the "truth." She asks the family doctor, who insists that Hudson is fine, so she angrily prepares to divorce her obviously lying husband. Eventually the bugs are worked out, and the couple reunite. leave a comment
