Mitchum plays a Nebraska attorney whose marriage is on the rocks and who loses his job. He heads for a new life in Manhattan where he meets old pal Firestone, who invites him to a Greenwich Village party. There he meets MacLaine, a dancer from the Bronx. They have a sexual, though not necessarily loving, affair, but Mitchum's mind is still in Nebraska. Mitchum lands a job with a New York law firm, and he and MacLaine try to make a go of their relationship. Shot in New York, this is a lethargic film that worked much better as a play because the large screen magnifies the talkiness and lack of emotional fireworks. Arthur Penn directed the play on Broadway with Henry Fonda and Anne Bancroft in the leads, and that trio was much better suited to the material than those involved with this film. Nominated by the Academy for Best Cinematography and Best Song. leave a comment
