Seeds Of Freedom

1943, Movie, NR, 67 mins

A very odd WW II propaganda film that takes Russian director Sergei Eisenstein's silent masterpiece POTEMKIN, dubbed with dialog and sound effects, and surrounds it with a bracket story which sees Russian freedom fighter Hull trying to inspire his downtrodden troops with the story of when he served on the battleship Potemkin at the time of the glorious revolution. The 1943 footage then "flashes back" to the 1925 masterpiece and stays there for most of the film. When we return to 1943, the Russian soldiers have been so inspired by Hull's tale that they happily plan an attack on the Nazis that will liberate their village. Someone had an incredible amount of nerve to dare this one, and pressure during war time is no excuse. A real oddity. leave a comment
