Psychiatrist Larry Livingston (Jeff Bridges) and his television actress wife, Jo (Farrah Fawcett) have a rocky marriage and two children, and eventually divorce. Beth Goodwin (Alice Krige), a potential world-class photographer, devoted wife of concert pianist Peter Goodwin (David Dukes), and the mother of his two children, is widowed when her husband dies prematurely. Larry is reluctantly coaxed by his friends to date, and meets Beth. The two are mutually attracted, and after a time they marry.
